Optical Coherence Tomography, or OCT, is an advanced eye scan for people of all ages and is included as part of our Essential +, Extended and Extended + eye examinations.
Common conditions identified through regular OCT screenings include:
- Age-related Macular Degeneration
Also known as AMD, Age-related macular degeneration is one of the leading causes of blindness in the UK. The central portion of your retina which enables detailed vision gradually deteriorates. An OCT can help identify the earliest signs of AMD and monitors the progression over time.
- Glaucoma
Glaucoma is a condition that causes damage to the optical nerve, and gradually causes loss of your peripheral vision. Early stages of glaucoma do not show any symptoms so a regular eye examination is essential to see how your eyes are. OCT examinations can measure a variety of features at the back of the eye and help assist early diagnosis of glaucoma.
- Diabetes
Diabetic Retinopathy is another leading cause of blindness within the UK, especially people of working age. An OCT examination will help enable the early detection of Diabetic Retinopathy, which allows early referral and ways to manage it, improving the rate of success of treatment.
A quick and painless procedure, the Optical Coherence Tomography takes cross-section pictures of your retina, which is the tissue lining the back of the eye.
