Glaucoma Awareness Month 2026
January is Glaucoma Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness of the “silent thief of sight” and the importance of early detection. This blog explains what glaucoma is, who is most at risk, and how regular, advanced eye examinations can help protect your vision for the future.

Glaucoma Awareness Month, observed every January, is an important time to highlight the vital role regular eye exams play in protecting long-term vision. Often referred to as the “silent thief of sight”, glaucoma can develop slowly and without noticeable symptoms. By the time vision changes are detected, permanent damage may already have occurred. This is why early detection and ongoing monitoring is essential.
At Martyn Kemp Opticians, we use advanced diagnostic technology, alongside clinical expertise, to detect glaucoma as early as possible, helping to preserve your vision for the future.
What is Glaucoma?
Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that can cause damage to the optic nerve due to pressure build-up inside the eye. Eye pressure rises when fluid inside the eye does not drain properly, placing strain on the optic nerve.

Because glaucoma rarely causes symptoms in its early stages, many people are unaware they have the condition. Routine eye exams allow our optometrists to measure the eye pressure accurately, assess the health of the optic nerve, and detect early structural changes using modern imaging technology. When caught early, treatment can significantly slow or prevent further vision loss.
The most common form of glaucoma, open-angle glaucoma, develops slowly and painlessly as the eye’s drainage system becomes less efficient. Closed-angle glaucoma is less common but more serious, causing a sudden rise in eye pressure and requiring urgent treatment. Other types include normal-tension glaucoma, congenital glaucoma (present from birth), and secondary glaucoma, which can develop due to injury, medication use, or medical conditions.
Who is Most at Risk?
While glaucoma can affect anyone, some people are at higher risk and benefit from more frequent eye exams. These include:
- People aged over 40
- Family history of glaucoma
- African, Caribbean, or Asian heritage
- Diabetics
- History of eye injury
- Long-term steroid users
If you identify with one of these groups, regular eye exams supported by advanced diagnostic testing are especially important for early detection and effective management.
