Happy autumn! The air’s getting crispier, the days are getting shorter, and cosy jumpers, comfort food, and pumpkin spice lattes are making a comeback. But whilst you’re embracing the autumn vibes, don’t forget that your eyes feel the seasonal shift too.

Colder temperatures, drier air, more screen time, and lower sun can all affect how your eyes feel and function. That's why it's the perfect time to give your eye care routine a little seasonal touch up.

These tips will help you protect and care for your eyes as the season changes.

Managing dry eyes this autumn

Colder weather and central heating dry the air out, which can leave your eyes feeling dry and irritated. Dry air, wind and autumn allergens can destabilise the tear film, resulting in blurry vision, irritation, and burning or gritty sensations.

To keep eyes comfortable, use a humidifier indoors, stay well hydrated, and take regular screen breaks. Lubricating eye drops may offer relief, our team is happy to recommend the best option for your needs. Outdoors, wraparound glasses or sunglasses provide effective protection against wind and airborne irritants.

Don't put those sunnies away just yet

Whilst you might feel inclined to put those sunglasses away during the end of the year, autumn sun still poses a large threat. Around this time of year, the lower sun can hit your eyes more directly, increasing the risk of UV rays entering the eyes unchecked. Even on cloudy days, up to 90% of UV rays can still penetrate through clouds.

That's why it’s important to keep your sunglasses close by. Choose styles that block 100% of UVA and UVB rays, feature wrap-around frames to shield against dust and wind, and opt for polarised lenses to reduce glare.

Tweak your lighting & screen time

With the days getting shorter, we’re all using more artificial light and spending more time on screens, whether it's phones, computers, tv’s, or tablets. Without proper care, this will lead to tired, strained eyes.

To help reduce this, follow the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, take a 20 second break to look at an object 20 feet away. Also, adjust your screen brightness to match the lighting in the room, reduce glare by positioning screens away from windows and overhead lights, and remember to take breaks to rest your eyes.

Fuel your vision with the right nutrition

This time of year is a great opportunity to support your eye health through what you eat. Seasonal foods like carrots, sweet potatoes, kale, spinach, and pumpkins are rich in vitamins A, C, and E which are key nutrients for maintaining healthy vision. Lutein and zeaxanthin, found in leafy greens, corn, and eggs, help protect your retina from light damage, while omega-3 fatty acids from oily fish, walnuts, and flaxseeds support tear production and eye comfort. Eating well and staying hydrated is one of the simplest ways to keep your eyes feeling their best.

Prioritise routine eye exams

Of course, regular eye exams are a must, no matter the season. Not only do they upgrade your prescription, but they can spot early signs of conditions like glaucoma, cataracts, and macular degeneration. Also, an eye exam can reveal signs of broader health issues like high blood pressure, diabetes, or high cholesterol. Whether you wear glasses, contact lenses, or have 20/20 vision, routine eye exams are essential.

Be prepared this autumn

Autumn may be a feast for the eyes, but the seasonal changes in temperature, humidity, light, and allergens can leave them feeling less than their best. But with a few simple adjustments, many of these common eye irritations can be managed or avoided. At Martyn Kemp Opticians, our experienced team is here to offer personalised advice, thorough eye exam, and expert care to keep your vision clear and comfortable.

If your eyes are feeling dry, tired, or irritated, or it's just simply time for your next eye exam, get in touch here. Let's help you see autumn at its best.
